Privacy is one of the central issues important to cryptocurrencies and bitcoin. While every bitcoin transaction is public, there are some systems such as ZCoin and Zcash that use cryptographic techniques to prove transactions have occurred and are correct without providing full information about the sender, recipient, or amount. Furthermore, techniques such as Zk-Snarks (zero knowledge protocols) have been added to Ethereum to improve fungibility. Additionally, a field of blockchain forensics has emerged with techniques to monitor illicit activity and money laundering taking place on the blockchain.
